Co-educational day school for ages 13 to 18, boarding 16+, 480+ pupils, County of East Sussex
About the School Founded in 1845 by William Aldwin Soames, who collected a group of likeminded local citizens to join him in the task, Brighton College was the first public school to be founded in Sussex. The college occupies a significant niche in the development of English secondary education during the 19th century: it helped to promote the use of individual classrooms for teaching small groups; it was an early pioneer in teaching both modern languages and science, and later erected the first purpose-built science laboratory; it invented the school magazine and set up the first gymnasium. The Senior School at Brighton College is a tremendously diverse and challenging environment. The aim of the Brighton College curriculum is to offer a broad range of subjects for study to GCSE and A level, whilst at the same time allowing pupils to specialise in their strengths. The core National Curriculum subjects provide the basis for GCSE studies, after which pupils can opt for an extra language, or a creative subject or two. Core subjects are covered in between 6 to 8 lessons per week, whilst other options are given 4 thirty five minute lessons per week. The Senior School is about much more than academic study however. There are abundant opportunities to excel inside and outside the classroom, in sport, music, dance and drama. The philosophy is that everyone should be able to contribute something to college life, and every student is encouraged to achieve their maximum potential. For some, this may happen performing on a stage, whilst for others it may come through the college Community Service programme or the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Brighton College has an established reputation for sporting excellence and continues to be one of the countries’s leading sporting schools. Pupils both past and present have enjoyed success at the highest level and many have gone on to represent their country after leaving the college.
Admissions Brighton College is an academically selective school. A year’s notice is normally required for admissions for both boys and girls. Candidate from overseas would also need to have an excellent grasp of English. Admissions would require the candidate’s details and an up to date school reference and subjects which would be taken at A level. Candidates will then be assessed in the November prior to the year of entry either at the school here or at a local British Council office by arrangement. This consists of a Verbal Reasoning Test; 20 minute interview (conducted via telephone if necessary); an English Language paper, and subject papers in the preferred A Level subjects to be sat at A Level.
Boarding Life The weekly boarding community at Brighton College is thriving. So much so, that a new boys' boarding house opened this year to fulfil the demand for places. Brighton College has a flexible boarding programme which suits family life and the clear need for teenagers to spend quality time at home with parents and siblings as well as with their peers. Rather than being obliged to commit to the traditional routine of six nights a week in a dorm, the boarders at Brighton College can choose to spend four nights at school and three at home. That is, they can arrive Monday morning and leave on Friday night. Of course, the majority love coming back in on Saturday for their sports fixtures and rehearsals, but there are no lessons on a Saturday morning so there is ample downtime to spend with family and friends. All the boarders at Brighton College regularly take advantage of the vast number of activities that take place during the evenings and also at weekends for those who board on a more full-time basis. Trips to Brighton Pavilion, the pier, the Dome and Theatre Royal, the Komedia, treks on the Sussex Downs, day trips to London's museums and shops...the opportunities are endless.
Location By air Heathrow airport is under 90 minutes away, Gatwick airport is under 45 minutes drive.
