Co-educational day and boarding school for ages 11 to 18, 990+ pupils, county of Kent
About the School Sevenoaks School was founded in 1432 and provides academic excellence with a strong pastoral and co-curricular emphasis and a global dimension inspired by the International Baccalaureate. Half an hour from Central London and from Gatwick International Airport, it is situated on an attractive 100-acre campus adjoining Knole Park. The Sunday Times recently ranked Sevenoaks as the Independent Secondary School of the Year, with superb GCSE and IB results, and was described as 'outstanding' in the Ofsted Boarding inspection 2009. Sevenoaks is the first all-IB school in England, and has taught the IB for over 30 years.
Admissions Sevenoaks is a co-educational school, offering both day and boarding. The main points of entry for students are: Age 11, 13 and 16. In the Sixth Form, all pupils study the International Baccalaureate diploma, an examination has been offered here since 1977. For admission to Year 7 (11+) application should be made one year prior to entry. Admission is by competitive examination, interview and report from a candidate's previous school. For admission to Year 9 (13+) application should be made at least two years prior to entry for both day and boarding places. For entry into the Sixth Form we look for evidence of strong all-round potential. Successful applicants will usually be predicted to gain top grades in most of their GCSEs or equivalent examinations. Sporting, creative or other talents are also important. Students must also have a high level of fluency in English, both written and spoken: between an Intermediate and Upper Intermediate level, equivalent to between B1 and B2 (CEFR); ALTE level 2/3; or IELTS level 6. Formal language qualifications are welcomed but not required. Candidates take entrance tests in each of their three proposed Higher Level subjects and in Mathematics (and, if this is not their native language, in English). Overseas candidates who cannot take the tests at Sevenoaks are expected to arrange invigilation at their current school or their local British Council offices.
Boarding There are about 1000 pupils in the school, including international students from over 40 countries around the world. Sevenoaks offers modern and family-friendly boarding for around 350 boys and girls. Boarding community is the size of many whole boarding schools. Pupils live, work and rest in seven well-appointed and imaginatively looked after houses. Four Boarding Houses cater for pupils from 13 to 18: School House and Johnsons for boys, and Sennocke and Park Grange for girls. Junior School pupils board in Lambardes; and the International Centre and the Girls' International House cater for Sixth Form boys and girls respectively; around half of the Sixth Form board. Boarding at Sevenoaks is fun, comfortable and busy. A full programme of sporting, cultural and social activities runs every weekend.
Location Sevenoaks School is 30 minutes drive from Gatwick and about 50 minutes drive from Heathrow. Fast trains run from Charing Cross, Waterloo East, London Bridge and Cannon Street (30 minutes) as well as from the Channel Ports and Ashford International with its Eurostar connections to Paris and Brussels. Sevenoaks Station is within walking distance (15 minutes) of the school and taxis are available at the station.
