Day School for Girls aged 2 to 18, Boarding from 10 to 18, 310+ girls, County of East Sussex
About the School Moira House is set within 15 acres of attractively landscaped grounds, on the outskirts of the historic town of Eastbourne on the south coast of England. Founded in 1875, Moira House School takes its name from the first premises in Surrey which belonged to an Irish nobleman from County Down, the Earl of Moira. The School is proud to offer excellent pastoral care and careful attention to the needs of each individual and provide as many opportunities as possible for girls to develop their full potential within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Twenty subjects are offered for GCSE and a similar number for A level. Pass rates are very high and almost every girl moves on to university, including Oxbridge. The Moira House Career Counselling Service is well-known and highly respected for the quality of the advice and support it offers. Girls aged 13 upwards are given every assistance towards both higher education and career opportunities.
Admissions The School does some testing to fit a child to the right course or level but Moira House is a non-selective school so there is no entrance exam as such.
English as an Additional Language Overseas students have the support of a strong EFL department which offers intensive courses, Business English and access to the full suite of Cambridge language exams. Girls with special needs will also receive additional help and support. Scholarships and exhibitions are awarded at the start of each year and bursaries are also available.
Boarding To meet the needs of individual families Moira House offers full, weekly and flexible boarding. School House provides attractive and comfortable accommodation. Boston House offers single or double study bedrooms. Great importance is placed on pastoral care, every girl is very much an individual and close communication between staff, parents and girls is encouraged. Boarders say that the best thing about boarding is their friends. Living and working in close proximity to others helps to develop friendships that last a lifetime. Families are freed from some of the mundane issues that can hamper family life and closer family relationships may follow. Boarding helps to develop self confidence and motivation. A greater sense of community spirit, an improved cultural awareness, and a respect for others come from living in a boarding community. Boarders can access school facilities for far longer. They have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of interests.
