About the School
Newlands School in Seaford is a unique independent school which delivers educational excellence and opportunities of exceptional quality. Admission
Newlands is proudly a non-selective school. It caters for a wide ability range, and its setting policy, allied to the extra help available to those who need some specific help to maximise their potential, allows the school to offer appropriate education to the majority of children. Entrance is by interview with the headmaster, and reports from the previous school.
Sussex International Study Centre (within Newlands School) - Sussex ISC prepares overseas students for entry into Newlands School or other good British senior school in the independent sector and also to prepare 6th form students for university.
Sussex ISC, Seaford, is an Independent, International Study Centre for students whose first language is not English, aged from 11 to 18 years. The Study Centre is situated on the outskirts of Seaford, East Sussex, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. By providing a happy and purposeful environment in which students can thrive, the teaching staffs of Newlands hopes to make their time at school an enjoyable learning experience. On arrival, each student sits a placement test and attends an interview to ensure that they are placed in the correct class. Each individual is helped to achieve his or her full potential so that they are able to develop at a pace consistent with their abilities. By catering for a range of ability, beginner to advanced, our flexible teaching arrangements allow each student to excel. Students from Newlands have, over the last few years, gone on to enter well established and reputable universities including Oxford, Durham, Nottingham, Southampton, Manchester, Bristol, UCL, Queen Mary’s and the University of Kent.
Course Information
Foundation A Level Course leading into AS/A Levels
At Sussex International Study Centre the teachers recognise the importance of offering our students a 3 year AS/A Level course. This will enable students aged 15—18 years to embark on a University degree course following this programme. New students joining the British educational system will have 20—25 intensive lessons in English for the first year, which includes the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The course also includes Maths, Art, and Sport & Business Studies. Regular cultural trips will introduce students to British culture. This Foundation AS/A Level course prepares students for entry into Y12. All students can enjoy the wealth of facilities offered at Newlands School. This includes an excellent sports hall, swimming pool, dance studios and large playing fields. In addition to the Academic Curriculum the School specialises in the fields of Performing Arts, Sports and Music.
Year 2/3 of the 3 year A Level Course
Following the successful completion of the Foundation A level course, students commence a 2 year AS/A Level course. At this stage students must have achieved an Upper Intermediate level in English. The British AS/A Level system will enable each student the opportunity to gain entrance into a British University. The students will also work towards the IELTS academic Cambridge Examination (or TOEFL for American Universities) which is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study in an institution where English is used as the language of communication, such as the University of their Choice.
Sussex ISC 2 Year AS/A level course
Sussex ISC also offers students a 2 year AS/A Level course. Students must take an English test to be accepted and must achieve a score of Upper Intermediate in this test to enable them to access A Level courses. Currently a wide variety of courses are offered, such as Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, I.C.T, Photography, Art, Textiles, P.E Business Studies and Economics.
IELTS for University Entrance
This two-year course accompanies the British AS/A Level Course and is suitable for students who wish to gain entry to a British University, but do not have a pass at English GCSE/IGCSE or an equivalent examination. The entry standard expected would be equivalent to ALTE Level 4, Competent User; Council of Europe Level C1. IELTS is designed to access the language ability of candidates who need to study in an institution where English is used as the language of communication. The course aims to improve candidates’ ability to use English effectively as well as to advance their knowledge of grammatical structures and vocabulary in the context of language use. Excellent examination results have enabled students to go to the higher educational establishments of their choice. Past students at Newlands School have been successful in securing a place at their university of choice. For those interested in entering an American University, we can offer an option to study for the TOEFL examination.
English as an Additional Languages
The majority of lessons take place on the senior school campus in small classes. Students enjoy a stimulating and varied curriculum taught by enthusiastic and specialist teachers. The school has wide experience of dealing with the needs of students from a diverse range of countries and cultures. The individual attention given to all students allows them to leave the International Study Centre well-qualified and confident. Students are prepared and encouraged to develop their own sense of independence and responsibility to help them take the necessary step on to life in an Independent Senior Boarding School or British University.
Younger Students
Students aged 13-14years, with little knowledge of English come to Sussex ISC to learn the vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary to converse successfully in English. This course covers the four skills needed in academic English studies: reading, writing, speaking and listening and lasts for one or two years depending on ability. Our aim is to make English lessons both entertaining and educational with the use of role-plays, communication games and project work. In addition to Intensive English lessons and Computer Assisted Language Learning, the curriculum also includes Mathematics, Introduction to the Sciences, Introduction to the Humanities, Art & Design Technology, Music, Sport, Activities and Cultural Studies.

Newlands School & Sussex ISC is located on the south coast of England near the city of Brighton, in the famous South Downs area of outstanding natural beauty.
By air – Gatwick airport is under one hour drive, London Heathrow airport is just under two hours away. By rail – London is two hours journey from Seaford station. Sussex ISC is serviced by excellent road links including the motorway links to London and the Channel Tunnel.
