Moira House School – Guardianship & Free School Placement
An Independent Day School for Girls aged 2 to 18, Boarding from 10 to 18, 310+ girls
Location: County of East Sussex, South East of England, UK
Welcome
Moira House is set within 15 acres of attractively landscaped grounds, on the outskirts of the historic town of Eastbourne on the south coast of England. Founded in 1875, Moira House welcomes girls from the age of 2 to 18 with full, weekly or flexi-boarding offered from the age of 10. The school takes its name from the first premises in Surrey which belonged to an Irish nobleman from County Down, the Earl of Moira. The school administration and teaching staff prides themselves on their excellent pastoral care and careful attention to the needs of each individual and provides as many opportunities as possible for girls to develop their full potential within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Senior School
For the first three years the girls follow a broad curriculum before being advised on the selection of their options for GCSE. The support system of committed caring and inspirational teachers together with outstanding facilities ensures each girl has the opportunity to excel. The well resourced library and extensive computer facilities for research are always available to the girls for private study. Close monitoring and assessment procedures maintain the continuing partnership between home and school which is at the heart of the Moira House ethos.
Sixth Form
Life in the 6th Form is very different from life in the first five years at secondary school. Sixth Formers come to see their teachers as helpers and guides rather than authority figures and learn to take more responsibility for themselves. Whilst in some ways a sixth former can live a more relaxed life, she also has to work much harder and far longer hours academically, and has to plan her life accordingly. Alongside her academic studies, the girls are encouraged to participate in many other aspects of school life and to play an integral part in the life of the school. Not only are there many extracurricular activities on offer, but they may wish to take on responsibility, for example, as a member of the League. The School staff believes that students work best in a happy, secure environment where our expectation is clear, where good work is recognised and where achievement is praised. Teachers at Moira House place great emphasis on relationships, encouraging students to relate well with each other and with staff. They believe that determination, commitment and hard work are the key to success. The Careers Study is housed within Boston House and a highly experienced Careers Counsellor is always available to discuss university applications and career choices. Yet the Senior School is not just about academic achievement. There is also emphasis on personal growth and everyone is encouraged to broaden their horizons in the way that best suits them.
GCSE and A level Results
It has been a successful summer for Moira House Girls School producing outstanding GCSE and A level results with 96% A*-C pass rate at GCSE and 97% pass rate at A level. At GCSE the school recorded its best ever results with an amazing 39.3% of all grades being A* and 69.9% A - A*.
Curriculum
The Moira House Academic Curriculum offers breadth and variety. It provides girls with a challenging and stimulating programme of study tailored to their individual needs and interests. In the Lower forms of the Senior School, the curriculum is broad, following national guidelines, and also including Latin, Drama and the introduction of three separate sciences at Form 3 (year 9). Twenty subjects are offered for GCSE and a similar number for A level. Pass rates are very high and almost every girl moves on to university, including Oxbridge. The Moira House Career Counselling Service is well-known and highly respected for the quality of the advice and support it offers. Girls aged thirteen upwards are given every assistance towards both higher education and career opportunities. Overseas students have the support of a strong EFL department which offers intensive courses, Business English and access to the full suite of Cambridge language exams. Girls with special needs will also receive additional help and support. Scholarships and exhibitions are awarded at the start of each year and bursaries are also available.
Boarding
To meet the needs of individual families Moira House offers full, weekly and flexible boarding. School House provides attractive and comfortable accommodation. Boston House offers single or double study bedrooms. Great importance is placed on pastoral care, every girl is very much an individual and close communication between staff, parents and girls is encouraged. Boarders say that the best thing about boarding is their friends. Living and working in close proximity to others helps to develop friendships that last a lifetime. Families are freed from some of the mundane issues that can hamper family life and closer family relationships may follow. Boarding helps to develop self confidence and motivation. A greater sense of community spirit, an improved cultural awareness, and a respect for others come from living in a boarding community. Boarders do not ‘lose’ time in travelling to and from school. They can go to the theatre in London, get off the bus and fall into bed, they don’t have to face the drive home nor do parents have to collect them at an ungodly hour. Boarders can access school facilities for far longer. They have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of interests.
