Admissions
King Edward's accepts pupils at ages 11 & 13 and for entry directly into the 6th Form. In some circumstances entry into other year groups will be considered. King Edward's is a British school that welcomes pupils from all round the world. International pupils represent approximately 20% of the school and they come from over 40 different countries. This ensures a rich cultural, educational and multiracial mix of pupils. Pupils wishing to come to King Edward's School for IB Diploma study should have a high level of English. If English is not the first language then there are two examinations in: English - mainly English comprehension using every day materials such as a newspaper story, and Mathematics. These can be taken at an approved overseas centre or at the pupil's present school by special arrangement.
For the Sixth Form overseas entrants will be expected to have at least five subjects at GCSE at grade C or above or the equivalent qualifications and take the overseas entrance papers. They should have a grade B or higher in the subjects they plan to study in the Sixth Form. All overseas pupils need to send or fax King Edward's a copy of a recent school report.
After the School entrance exams have been taken, pupils who have passed will be offered places. This will normally be within two weeks of the examinations. It may be longer if the examinations are taken at an overseas centre. An early acceptance is advised, as places are normally limited. A place can only be confirmed on completion of the Acceptance Form and payment of the necessary acceptance fee and deposit.
The International Baccalaureate
IB was introduced to King Edward's in 2004 and from 2010 will be the sole curriculum in the Sixth Form. This course aims to provide a genuine breadth of study beyond 16 so that pupils can keep their options open a little longer. All pupils take their own language, foreign language, humanity, science, Mathematics and arts based subject or a second subject of their own choice form the other curriculum areas. The curriculum is well constructed and planned at all levels and provides a strong sense of continuity and progression of learning. At all phases it prepares pupils effectively for the next stage. The curriculum is further enriched by a well-planned programme of extracurricular trips and visits so that good opportunities are available to enhance the personal development of the individual.
English as an Additional Language
Learning Support Department co-ordinates the programme of extra English lessons for all international pupils. A team of experienced teachers of English as an Additional Language (EAL) provide tuition on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, depending on ability. Upon joining the school, the English ability of each overseas pupil is assessed so that an individual programme of EAL lessons is devised, and this is monitored regularly so that lessons can be increased or reduced accordingly. There is an additional charge for this tuition.
